ATONEMENT

 ATONEMENT

I've heard that a simplistic explanation of “ATONEMENT” is to break down the word itself as:

“AT ONE MENT”

“For if we have become ONE WITH HIM [permanently united] in the likeness of His death, we will also certainly be [ONE WITH HIM and share fully] in the likeness of His resurrection.” (Rom6:5AMP)

Now if we have DIED WITH CHRIST, we believe that we will also LIVE [TOGETHER] WITH HIM” (Rom6:8)

1 Corinthians 6:17 BSB

But he who unites himself with the Lord is ONE WITH HIM in spirit.

The theme of substitution is found throughout the Old Testament as a precursor to the once-for-all ATONEMENT accomplished by Jesus Christ.

Lev16 specifically details this process in the DAY OF ATONEMENT (Yom Kippur).

There were two goats chosen as ATONEMENT for the sins of Israel.

One was to be slain and taken into the Holy Place  “…So he shall make ATONEMENT for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel… for all their sins” (Lev16:16)

But the high priest lays both hands on the head of the second, living goat, confesses “all the iniquities of the Israelites and all their transgressions” (Leviticus 16:21), and symbolically transfers guilt to the animal as a “SCAPEGOAT”.
That goat is then escorted outside the camp and released, demonstrating the the
ATONEMENT and COMPLETE REMOVAL of the people’s sins. “The goat shall carry on itself all their iniquities to a solitary place” (Leviticus 16:22).
Thus dramatizing Ps103:12: “…as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”

This is all presented so that mankind would completely understand the ATONEMENT provided through Christ Jesus.

Mtt8:16-17NKJV "He Himself TOOK our infirmities And BORE our sicknesses."

“TOOK”-  lambánō, meaning: "to lay hold of, by aggressively (activelyaccepting what is available (offered).

“BORE” bastazo: derived from the base of bases [foot] (through the idea of removal); to lift, literally or figuratively  -- bear, carry, take up… TO TAKE IT UPON THE FEET AND WALK AWAY WITH IT

Heb10:17NKJV "Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more."

Christ did not die FOR you…. He died AS YOU!

Christ was not resurrected FOR you… He was resurrected AS YOU!

He bore Sickness and Disease… AS YOU!

He bore PAIN … AS YOU! (Isa 53:4-5)

THE LAMB was sacrificed IN YOUR PLACE… AS YOU

THE SCAPEGOAT walked away with all your sin AS YOU!

You are “ FOUND IN HIM…” (Phi3:9)

“…AND YOU ARE COMPLETE IN HIM” (Col2:10)

ATONEMENT….

         ...AT - ONE - MENT
