DISCIPLE
DISCIPLE
We talk a lot about DISCIPLESHIP… but the definitions, understanding, and requirements are as varied as the individuals requiring it… and the people desiring to be one.
The pre-Christian sense of "DISCIPLE, scholar, pupil, student" is rare in English and is of uncertain origin. Accordng to most scholars the word “DISCIPLE” is from a lost compound discipere - to grasp intellectually, analyze thoroughly," from dis - "apart" + capere - "to take, take hold of”. It was generally accepted to mean, "one who follows or is influenced by the doctrine or example of another"
Jn8:31NKJV "If you abide in My word, you are My DISCIPLES indeed.”
The Greek concept behind the word “mathētḗs” is found in its root “math”: the "mental effort needed to think something through” differently after being instructed in the TRUTH.
Jesus Christ is THE TRUTH (Jn14:6)
… “And you shall know THE TRUTH, and THE TRUTH shall make you free." (Jn8:32NKJV)
So… the idea behind the word DISCIPLE itself is NOT centered around what you do… what you are supposed to do… nor how you do it…
…but, rather a process of changing the way you think…
… the way you think things through…
…thus changing the way you live your life.
This ties into the idea behind what Jesus began His whole ministry preaching:
“REPENT”, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” (Mtt4:17NKJV)
REPENT is translated from “metanoeo”. A compound word made up of “metá,”- changed after being with; and “noiéō” – to think…
…together being: “TO THINK DIFFERENTLY AFTER BEING WITH”
Col1:13KJV (God) “hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:”
So… as Christ states in Mtt4:17: “Since there is a new King and a New Kingdom right here with you… … NOW YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY!”
Rom12:2NKJV “…be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”
…NOW YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY!
The Father drew you to Jesus (Jn6:44)
“You did not choose Me, but I chose you” (Jn15:16NKJV)
“We love Him because He first loved us.” (1Jn4:19NKJV)
…NOW YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY!
1Cor2:16NKJV “we have the mind of Christ.”
“LET this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,” (Phil2:5NKJV)
You were crucified WITH HIM (Gal2:20)
…raised WITH HIM (Eph2:6)
…seated WITH HIM (Eph2:6)
You are changed after being WITH HIM…
…NOW YOU THINK DIFFERENTLY!
