CONVICTION

CONVICTION

I have frequently heard the phrase, “the Holy Spirit CONVICTED me”… or… “I was CONVICTED by the Lord”.  As a young boy I was taught that God was this big eye in the sky continually watching to see if I was being good… and the Holy Spirit, being on my shoulder, would  speak in my ear to bring that guilt… shaming me back to the right path.the moment I stepped out of line

But… why did Jesus send the Holy Spirit to us?

In  Jn16:7 Christ calls the Holy Spirit “THE COMFORTER”. He uses the term, “parakletos”, which was used in NT times of an attorney (lawyer)… someone giving evidence that stands up in court.

It comes from two words: para” (close-beside), and kaleo(make a call). The word properly means: a legal advocate, advisor, or alongside helper who makes the right judgment-call because close enough to the situation.

Zech3 clearly portrays a courtroom drama unfolding… Joshua, the high priest standing in filthy garments before an angel of the Lord as judge…  with Satan at his right hand to ACCUSE him.

[note: The Hebrew word for “accuse” is “satan”]

Zech3:4 He spoke to those who were standing before him, "Remove the filthy garments from him." Again he said to him, "See, I have taken your iniquity away from you and will CLOTHE YOU with rich robes."

What happens when the Holy Spirit comes upon you?

You are “CLOTHED WITH POWER from on high” (Lk24:49;1Cor15:43)

In Jn16:7 Christ calls The Holy Spirit  OUR “ADVOCATE” or “DEFENSE ATTORNEY”.

And what does He do on your behalf?

·       Guide you into all truth (Jn16:13)

·       Glorify Jesus Christ (Jn16:14)

·       Hear and speak only for Christ (Jn16:13-15)

·       Show you things to come (Jn16:13)

·       Abide with you forever (Jn14:16)

·       Teach you all things (Jn14:26)

Bring to your remembrance all things Christ has said to you (Jn14:26)

…Does He “CONVICT”?

Yes… Jn16:8  says, “He will CONVICT THE WORLD of sin!”

                  Why?

…because they do not believe in HIM (Jn16:9)

The word, “CONVICT” literally means to CONVINCE with solid, compelling evidence.

On which side of the cross do we live?

WE LIVE BECAUSE OF HIS RESURRECTION… NOT JUST BECAUSE OF HIS DEATH!

Since we have been thoroughly cleansed from sin by HIS sacrifice, there is no more consciousness of sin... no more CONVICTION... now you are "CONVICTED" or "CONVINCED" OF RIGHTEOUSNESS because "HE goes to the Father". “Under this new covenant… Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more." (Heb10:17;Jer31:33-34;Jn16:10)

So, of what does our ADVOCATE declare?

He CONVINCES OF CHRIST... who HE is... and what HE has accomplished…

CONSEQUENTLY...

WHO WE ARE BECAUSE OF WHAT HE HAS DONE!

YOU DIED... and your life is hid with Christ in God. (Col3:3)

YOU ARE:

RAISED, RESURRECTED WITH HIM (Rom6:4;Col2:12)

...SEATED WITH HIM (Eph2:6)

A NEW CREATURE (2Cor5:17)

MADE HOLY (Rom6:22)

…MADE THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IN CHRIST JESUS. (2Cor5:21)
