FOR THIS REASON

 

“FOR THIS REASON many are weak and sick among you, and many sleep (have died).” (1Cor11:30)

 

“Among you”… to whom is Paul speaking? 

                  …“brethren”, according to verse 2.

…He is speaking TO BELIEVERS!

 

He is letting BELIEVERS know why many among them are

                  Weak… sick… and have even died!

                                    “NOT DISCERNING THE LORD’S BODY” (referring back to verses 26-29)

 

Hmmm…let's examine those verses a little closer.

 

·       1Cor11:26 “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you PROCLAIM the Lord's death till He comes.”

[by the way… it says “as often” as you do this… not necessarily “do this often”, creating a ritual]

PROCLAIM - to decisively announce a message with authority in a definite (binding) way.

 

·       1Cor11:27 “Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an UNWORTHY MANNER [To test and not value corresponding to the top of its worth] will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.”

(Hmmm… and I was taught to fear I might be unworthy]

 

·       1Cor11:28  [literal Greek] “But let a man himself examine [not: “examine himself”] to distinguish and determine the genuineness, value or worth, and in this manner of the bread, let him eat, and of the cup let him drink”

 

·       1Cor11:29 For he who eats and drinks *unworthily* [not in the verse… added by translators] eats and drinks judgment to himself, NOT DISCERNING THE LORD’S BODY.

 

The literal translation: “The one for eating and drinking judgement on himself, eats and drinks not DISCERNING the body”

DISCERNING - investigate (judge) thoroughly back-and-forth… to separate, distinguish, and discern

 

 

SO… What was accomplished on the Lord’s body that we should “investigate thoroughly back and forth” in order to distinguish “the top corresponding value of its worth”?

 

·       Isa53:4-5 “Surely He has borne OUR griefs (sickness) And carried OUR sorrows (pains)… …He was wounded for OUR transgressions, He was bruised for OUR iniquities; The chastisement for OUR peace was upon Him, And by His stripes WE ARE HEALED.”

 

·       1Pet2:24 “He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His stripes YOU WERE HEALED.”

 

SO, NOW…

1Cor11:24  “Take, eat; this is MY BODY which is BROKEN FOR YOU; do this in remembrance of ME.”

FORMING YOUR WORLD

  Forming Your World     Have you been in a place in life where you feel like your world has no form, reason, nor rationale to it… like it is void of meaning or direction… and it seems like the darkness is so deep and thick that you not only can't see, but are so disoriented you have no clue as to which way is up?     How do you get out of THAT?     Gen1:1-2 describes just that scenario, but on a grand universal scale: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. CONVICTION

  CONVICTION   I have frequently heard the phrase, “the Holy Spirit CONVICTED me”… or… “I was CONVICTED by the Lord”.  As a young boy I was taught that God was this big eye in the sky continually watching to see if I was being good… and the Holy Spirit, being on my shoulder, would  speak in my ear to bring that guilt… shaming me back to the right path.the moment I stepped out of line   But… why did Jesus send the Holy Spirit to us?     In  Jn16:7 Christ calls the Holy Spirit “ THE COMFORTER ”. He uses the term, “ parakletos ”, which was used in NT times of an  attorney (lawyer)… someone  giving evidence that stands up in court .   It comes from two words: “ para ” (close-beside), and “ kaleo ” (make a call).
