THE GLORY OF GOD

THE GLORY OF GOD

“ALL HAVE SINNED AND COME SHORT OF THE GLORY OF GOD” (Rom3:23)

Since the first word of this particular verse is "ALL"…

…and this particular Greek word means:  every individual part that applies…

…not the totality of the whole…

Let’s take a look at one piece at a time of Rom3:23 to see if we can get a clearer understanding of the total picture.

“HAVE SINNED”

hamartánō - properly, having no share in; to sin, which always brings forfeiture

It is regularly used in ancient literature of an archer missing the target.

Perhaps from a (as a negative particle) and the base of meros; properly, to miss the mark (and so not share in the prize).

Every decision (action) done apart from faith is SIN (Rom14:23; Heb11:6).

“COME SHORT”

hysteréō ("failing to fulfill a goal") means to be in lack… having insufficiency… and hence, unable to meet the need of what is vital at hand because depleted ("all run out").

Heb:1. Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it.

NOW…

What is it that target or goal we, as individuals… and in every aspect of our life… seem to lack sufficiency to meet the need…

…and thus are missing?

“OF THE GLORY OF GOD”

GLORY

doxa/doksaevoking good opinion that something has inherent, intrinsic worth… hence praise, honor, glory

(from dokeō, "exercising personal opinion which determines value").

The article or preposition, “OF” in the above cases is a Genitive/ Imperative part of speech.

The genitive case expresses possession: "my hat" or "Harry's house.

“Imperative” would imply the mood of a demand or command.

2 Cor 3:18 beholding in a mirror the GLORY of the Lord – THE LORD’S GLORY

WE look into the mirror and see all of our own flaws, shortcomings, failures, and insufficiencies…

…rather than seeing the LORD’S GLORY

…His opinion of our intrinsic value or worth

What we keep missing is…

“OF THE GLORY OF GOD”

OR…LITERALLY…

“TAKING POSSESSION AS YOUR OWN,

GOD’S PERSONAL OPINION

WHICH DETERMINES YOUR VALUE/ INTRINSIC WORTH”
