Let Your Words Be Few

Let Your Words Be Few

One of the toughest things for a man to learn is how to control his tongue.

In fact, James3:7 says, “it is impossible!” … no one has done it yet!

“If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God… that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ…” (1Pet4:11)

In Jn12:49-50 Jesus explains: “…I have never spoken on My own initiative or authority, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment regarding WHAT TO SAY and WHAT TO SPEAK.

I know that His commandment is eternal life. So, the things I speak, I speak [in accordance with His exact instruction,] just as the Father has told Me.”

Ecclesiastes 5:1-3 outlines the process what to speak… and how… and when… to say it.

1.     “Guard your steps as you go to the house of God.”

…and what is the house of God?

In Jesus Christ “YOU also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.” (Eph2:20-22)

Approaching people as the house or temple of God… not a building…

2.     “…and approach TO LISTEN”

Most of the time we approach with something to SAY.

“For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.” (Rom8:14)

“…HEAR the word at my mouth and give them warning from me.” (Eze3:17;33:7)

“Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will DRAW IT OUT.” (Pr20:5)

3.     “…rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools;

for they do not know that they are doing evil.

“A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards.” (Pr29:11)

In “MANY WORDS there is also vanity...” (Eccl5:7NKJV)

…because “knowledge puffs up” yourself… “but love builds up” others (1Cor8:1)

4.     “…Do not be quick with your mouth or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter in the presence of God.”

“Wherefore… let EVERY man be

·      swift to hear,

·      slow to speak,

·      slow to wrath.” (Jas1:19)

5.     “…For God is in heaven and you are on the earth;”

“I have not spoken of myself… even as the Father said unto me, so I speak.” (Jn12:49-50)

6.     “…therefore… LET YOUR WORDS BE FEW…”

“The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned,

that I should know how to speak A WORD IN SEASON...” (Isa50:4)

“…The words of the wise are like goads (cattle prods)

…and the words of scholars are like well-driven nails,

given by one Shepherd.” (Eccl12:8-11)

…but often we keep pounding and pounding the nail to drive point home.

7.     “…For the dream comes through much effort,

…and the voice of a fool THROUGH MANY WORDS.”

“One who withholds his words has knowledge…

…Even a fool, when he keeps silent, is considered wise...” (Pr17:27-28)

“In the MULTITUDE OF WORDS sin is not lacking,

but he who restrains his lips is wise.” (Pr10:19)

We are to be a polished arrow sent from the Father to strike the heart of the target (Isa49:2)

“…HOW DELIGHTFUL IS A TIMELY WORD!” (Pr15:23)
