MAKROTHUMIA

MAKROTHUMIA

While fearfully cowering before three massive approaching armies, Israel was told, “Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you.” (2Chron 20:17)

When told to “SET YOURSELF",  You position in such a way that it doesn’t matter how long it takes…. You are FULLY PERSUADED, unshakeable, and immovable. Forbearance, patience, longsuffering, steadfastness… come to mind when you “Stand" in such a strong fighting position.

Two keys to “SETTING OURSELVES” are found in Heb 6:12:

"That ye be not slothful,

but followers of them

who through FAITH and PATIENCE

inherit the promises.”

THE TWO KEYS:

·       "FAITH

Faith is ALWAYS used as a noun - a person, place, or thing.  It is substance and evidence NOW.  It is not what you do to get something... it's a SET PLACE from which you see the situation, and from where all your decisions are made.

·       "PATIENCE" is mainly translated from 2 Greek words:

1.     "HUPOMONE"... used in Jas 1:3-4  "…the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing".

Hupomone - constant, cheerful, consistency

"Constant, cheerful, consistency " works a perfect work in you so you may live "perfect, entire, wanting nothing"!!!

HOWEVER, The word for patience used in Heb 6:12 above is:

2.     "MAKROTHUMIA", usually translated "LONGSUFFERING"

We think that "long suffering" means to just grit your teeth and bear the suffering until it is over.

But… this Greek word paints a different picture.

Makrothumia –

"makro" means long or enduring, and "thumos" means intense, fiery passion.

SO… Heb 6:12 would literally say:

“Don’t be slow, lazy, nor complacent…

But join the others seated with Christ!

…Seeing now from HIS vantage point…

and knowing that ALL THE PROMISES OF GOD…

ARE ALREADY YES AND “SO BE IT!”…

you enduringly stand…

And after having done all…

Remain standing…

with the same INTENSE, FIERY PASSION you had FROM THE BEGINNING…

inheriting those promises"

THIS BATTLE HAS ALREADY BEEN WON!

Set yourself!

Stand still!

See the salvation of the Lord!
