Occupy Till I Come
OCCUPY TILL I COME…
In Luke 19:12-27 Christ was telling the disciples a parable about a man going to a far land to "receive his kingdom" leaving ten servants with ten talents, telling them, “OCCUPY TILL I COME” (vs 13).
He uses a word there, "pragmateoumai”, that means to be occupied in anything, or to carry on a business
It is derived from "pragma" - a work, deed, or matter as an accomplished fact, which has already been done.
This is the Greek word from which we get our word “pragmatic" - dealing with things sensibly and realistically in a way that is based on practical rather than theoretical considerations.
In this day and age we might not have often heard someone called “PRAGMATIC”, but we have, more than likely heard them labeled any one of the Synonyms:
practical, matter-of-fact, sensible, down-to-earth, businesslike,
having both/one's feet on the ground, no-nonsense, informal, hard-nosed… even hardheaded.
In this verse Jesus is speaking of something very PRACTICAL and NOT THEORETICAL!
Not necessarily being hardheaded about it… but definitely down-to-earth and sensible…
…diligently and matter-of-factly going about the business at hand
This command, “OCCUPY TILL I COME” was not suggesting that the servants take up space until the master returns. Nor is it used as a military decree to stand firm with trained forces maintaining conquered territory - though that is a great idea.
Instead, it is a picture of a master who leaves his servants to CONTINUE A WORK HE HAS ALREADY FINISHED, in the same manner and fashion… and with the same heart… with which He began it.
Jesus said in Jn14:12NKJV “…he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
As a servant/friend/son of the King left here to "OCCUPY TILL HE COMES",
we are to realize this kingdom IS an accomplished fact!
It is a work already done!
Since that Kingdom is already established as a fact,
All we are doing is carrying on the work or accomplished business until He returns....
AND WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE GOODS TO FULFILL THE TASK!
So… we can, indeed…
OCCUPY TILL I COME!
