TETELESTAI: IT IS FINISHED

Tetelestai, IT IS FINISHED

The Gospel of John was written in Greek, which was the common language for business, commerce, political, and other public dealings of the day.

IT IS FINISHED” is only one Greek word, “tetelestai

There will always be a debate concerning what language Jesus and the disciples spoke, mainly so the enemy can keep everyone focused on something else other than Jesus Christ… THE WORD… the LOGOS (the thought, intent purpose, and motive behind what is spoken) (Jn1:1-14)

Tetelestai is only found twice in the New Testament… two verses apart.

·       John 19:28  “Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished (Tetelestai), that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, I thirst.”

·       John 19:30  “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, IT IS FINISHED (Tetelestai): and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.”

John states that Jesus said, “tetelestai”

However… whether He spoke Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic, it was basically the same meaning.

The intent was to convey a universally understood message ringing throughout eternity…

IT IS FINISHED.

Tetelestai as a contemporary business term :

·       For a debt:  “the debt has been paid in full”

·       An employee finishing his daily work or particular project, would announce, “Tetelestai”  signifying to his boss “the fulfillment of the task”

·       Similarly, an artist unveiling a masterpiece would announce “Tetelestai”, demonstrating “the work is complete”

Tetelestai  as a judicial term for court proceedings:  “the sentence has been fully served”

Tetelestai as a military term:  the enemy utterly vanquished,  “the battle has been fully won”

Additionally… Every Jewish person present would have instantly recognized “Tetelestai” as the equivalent of a Hebrew phrase used by the High Priest during their holiday, “The Day of Atonement”, wherein all the sins of the people were placed on a lamb, subsequently killed (punished) in their place.  Upon completion of the sacrifice, the emerging priest would declare to the waiting crowd, “it is finished” in Hebrew.  “The Sacrifice Is Accomplished”

There is no more sacrifice necessary.

…no more work to be done.

EVERYTHING has been fully paid.

You are SAVED!…  delivered, healed, whole… FREE!

Tetelestai

IT IS FINISHED!
