EVERY WHIT WHOLE

EVERY WHIT WHOLE

Sometimes I enjoy the poignant way King James states a scripture.

John 7:23 KJV

If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision,

that the law of Moses should not be broken;

are ye angry at me, because

I have made a man every whit whole

on the sabbath day?

But… what is “EVERY WHIT”?

The Greek word "holos", translated above as “EVERY WHIT”, is used in the New Testament to describe the whole or all of something in its entirety, without division or lacking any part.

The Greek interlinear renders “every whit”  as: “entirely”, reading :

“entirely a man sound I made” (which strangely sounds like Yoda from Star Wars)

Holos” is used as “ALL” in Mtt22:37:

“Jesus said to him, 'You shall love the LORD your God

with ALL your heart,

with ALL your soul, and

with ALL your mind.’”

Mtt16:26  demonstrates the usage of “holos” to describe the totality of which something encompasses, stating: “For what profit is it to a man if he gains the WHOLE world, and loses his own soul?”

But… It would be redundant to say, “WHOLLY WHOLE”, so, instead, King James ends up with “EVERY WHIT WHOLE”.

The word “WHOLE” is a different Greek word, “hugiés”, meaning: sound, whole, healthy, pure, wholesome. The term always implies a state of being sound, complete, and healthy, both physically and metaphorically.

Remember the story of the story of the man waiting at the Pool of Bethesda who had an infirmity for thirty eight years?

Could you imagine laying there for years knowing that only the FIRST person to step in after the waters were troubled would be “made WHOLE of whatsoever disease he had.” (Jn5:4)

                  …and you couldn't move

…nor had anyone to help you in? (Jn5:7)

Jesus asked him, “Wilt thou be made WHOLE?” (Jn5:6)

Have you been where that man was… hopeless… stuck… sick… frustrated…

…feeling like “strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope” (Eph2:12)

… waiting for something or someone to manifest so you can be MADE WHOLE?

Eph2:12 “But NOW in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.”

“Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

And IMMEDIATELY the man was made WHOLE…” (Jn5:8-9)

NOW… in the name of Jesus Christ…

…BE… EVERY WHIT WHOLE!
