NOW YOU SEE ME... NOW YOU DON'T
“NOW YOU SEE ME… NOW YOU DON’T”
In John 16 the disciples were confused as Jesus was explaining how He is here… must go to the Father… He will send the Holy Spirit to guide them into all truth… but they’ll see Him again.
In verse 19 He begins unraveling a mystery of how things will be from “that day” on.
First of all, He knew “that they desired to ASK Him.” Here He uses the word, “erotao” – request as a favor”.
So, He knew that they wanted to ask a favor of Him…
and then He said to them, “Are you INQUIRING (zeteo – ask, a search for something hidden) among yourselves about what I said, ‘A little while, and you will not see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me?”
Verses 20-22 He reinforces that they will not be sorrowful anymore, but joyful.
Now He begins to break it down for them.
· 16:23 “in that day you will ASK Me nothing.”
(erotao – request as a favor)
“In that day when I go to the Father you will NO LONGER ASK ME FOR FAVORS.”
· 16:23 “Most assuredly, I say to you, whatever you ASK the Father in My name He will give you.”
Here he changes to AITEO – which is strictly a demand for something due!
“Be assured that because I accomplished my Father’s purpose… all the promises are yes and amen to you and have ALREADY been placed in your account… you simply put a draw on that inheritance.
· 16:24 “Until now you have ASKED (aiteo – demanded what is due) nothing in My name.”
· 16:24 “ASK (aiteo – demand what is in your account) and you will receive, that your joy may be full.”
· 16:25 "I’ve spoken figuratively… but now I will tell you plainly about the Father.”
· 16:26 “In that day you will ASK (aiteo – demand what is due) in My name…”
· 16:26 “…and I do not say that I shall PRAY (erotao – ask; request as a favor) the Father for you”
“I won't request any favors of the Father on your behalf!”
· 16:27 “…BECAUSE THE FATHER HIMSELF LOVES YOU,
because you have loved Me...”
· 16:29 and the disciples said,
“NOW YOU SPEAK PLAINLY.”
