COUNT IT ALL JOY
COUNT IT ALL JOY
It is amazing how Hebrew and Greek are very graphic… even picturesque in nature.
They rely upon nuances, such as person, tense, mood, voice, case, number, gender, and comparison to paint the idea or concept in the listener’s mind of the very thought, intent, purpose, and motive… the heart… the perspective from which the conveyor/communicator sees.
For example…
Jas1:2 “…count it all joy
when you fall into various temptations…”
The word, “COUNT”: “hēgéomai” is usually translated as governor, leader, chief, ruler… but also as… consider, count, think, esteem, judge, regard, suppose.
Directly Defined: to lead the way (going before as chief), esteem, judge, suppose, think.
Now… Depending on the Tense, Mood, or Voice the word expands the normally defined limitations and colorizes a depth of perception not seen within our normal literal filter.
In this case, “going before as chief" unfolds into “coming first in priority”…
such as: "the leading thought" in one's mind, i.e., to esteem (regard highly).
Likewise… the word “ALL” in this particular case is not just the total sum of the whole.
Instead…
“Pás” ("each, every") means "all" in the sense of "each (every) part that applies."
The emphasis of the total picture then is on "one piece at a time."
“TEMPTATIONS” is another word determined as above.
“Peirasmós”- temptation or test- both senses can apply simultaneously (depending on the context). The positive sense ("test") and negative sense ("temptation") are functions of the context (not merely the words themselves).
The very next verse uses the same word to state that this “testing of your faith works patience.” (Jas1:3)
So… In light of all this…
…let's see the “colorized” version of James1:2-4
“With JOY as the leading thought in your mind,
know that every aspect of a particular trial/ temptation is a crucible,
fashioning an approved, genuine faith after testing…
…resulting in a life of constant, cheerful consistency (patience) as the end goal.
Allow that patience to expand like an old pirate’s telescope… one stage at a time… until it functions at its full strength of focus and clarity on the end result:
fulfilling the necessary process in you…
that you will be fully matured…
complete with divinely-allotted wholeness…
LACKING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING”
