Despise, Faint, or Endure
DESPISE, FAINT, OR ENDURE
Dealing with correction is one of the hardest things the human ego must learn to ENDURE.
Fortunately, Hebrews 12 addresses that issue… quoting Proverbs 3:11-12.
“My son, DESPISE NOT the chastening of the Lord,
NOR FAINT when you are rebuked by Him;
for whom the Lord loves He chastens,
and scourges every son whom He receives." (Heb12:5-6)
The author dissects, examines, and then pieces back together how our soul reacts… and then should react… to chastisement - correction, instruction, rebuke, and reproof... training.
Verse 1 starts right off explaining how we are running a race and must lay aside everything weighing us down… as well as the particular sin which so EASILY BESETS US -
[properly, a serious hindrance that "encircles" (hampers) someone who desperately needs to advance.]
HOW?
Verse 2: “LOOK UNTO JESUS”
“being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it…” (Phil1:6)
And… so… don't FAINT in your mind (Verse:3). Consider what Christ ENDURED for you…
Even in the garden of Gethsemane, agonizing to align His will with the Father’s will… to the point He “sweat, as it were, great drops of blood” (Lk22:44)
YOU HAVE NOT YET RESISTED SIN TO THAT POINT! (Verse:4)
When we FAINT, we perceive ourselves as failures… the whole body goes limp.
So… he says in Heb12:12-13,
“Therefore, lift up the hands which hang down and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed.”
The author completes the chapter charging the reader to not DESPISE nor reject the voice of THE ONE WHO spoke the worlds into existence…
No matter how He speaks to you.
Back to Verse:7…
“If you ENDURE CHASTENING
[ENDURE - hypoménō – literally, remaining under (the load), bearing up (enduring)]
God deals with you as with sons…
Pr23:12AMPC
Apply your mind to instruction and correction, and your ears to words of knowledge.
Verse:11
CHASTENING IS TRAINING!
It never presently “seems joyous,
but grievous (distressing, painful).
Nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness
unto those who are EXERCISED THEREBY.”
[EXERCISED: - gymnazo – train naked with one’s full effort]
Heb4:13
“…all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of HIM with whom we have to do.”
SELF CONSCIOUSNESS and SELF PRESERVATION are two major downfalls in this process.
Remember the first thing Adam and Eve did after they disobeyed?
· Covered themselves
· And hid. (Gen3:7-8)
Allowing your SELF to be naked and open… without cover-up… is key to ENDURING.
Lk17:33
“Whosoever shall seek to save (preserve for oneself)
his LIFE
(psuche – soul as seat of emotions/affections and will)
shall lose it;
and whosoever shall lose his LIFE
shall preserve it.”
