What to Say and What to Speak

WHAT TO SAY AND WHAT TO SPEAK

Jn12:49AMP

“For I have never SPOKEN on My own initiative or authority,

but the Father Himself

who sent Me

has given Me a commandment regarding

WHAT TO SAY

and

WHAT TO SPEAK.”

Why would Jesus make a statement like this?

It sounds rather redundant.

Maybe if we took a look at context and the original Greek, we might get a better understanding.

“SAY” is the Greek word “eipo”, used abundantly throughout the Bible and other Greek literature connotating “to simply utter words…  to “answer, bid, bring a word, tell, call, speak or say by word or writing

AS AN INDIVIDUAL EXPRESSION.

“SAY”, then, would be the WAY a certain person would talk or express themselves.

SPEAK is a different Greek word…

And the next verse (Jn12:50) provides a hint to the intent behind it.

Jn12:50AMP

“I KNOW that His commandment is eternal life.

So the things I SPEAK

SPEAK [in accordance with His exact instruction,]

just as the Father has told Me.”

Jn6:63

When Christ opens His mouth and SPEAKS (laleo)

His words (rhema – to simply open the mouth and utter)

are spirit and life.

Why?

The secret lies in the source: “as the Father has said…”

SPEAK – laleo – is defined as: “an extended harangue using words in order to declare one's mind and disclose one's thoughts;

to speak: absolutely.”

Mtt12:34;Lk6:35 drives this home further stating:

“…OUT OF THE ABUNDANCE OF THE HEART

the mouth SPEAKS(laleo)

Thayer’s Greek Dictionary indicates:

“…the primary meaning of laleoto utter oneself.

It is the expression of the soul's thoughts…  to utter words in accordance with one's inner character.”

Continuing on with Mtt12:35-37 for clarity in context…

“A good man out of the good treasure of the heart

brings forth good things:

and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

But I SAY (lego: to relate in words a systematic or set discourse)

unto you,

That every idle word (rhema)

that men shall SPEAK (laleo)

they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

For by your words (logos: the thought, intent, purpose, and motive behind what is spoken)

you shall be justified,

and by your words (logos)

you shall be condemned.

1Cor14:9

“…likewise, except you UTTER (laleo) by the tongue

words (logos) easy to be understood,

how shall it be known what is spoken?

for you shall SPEAK (laleo) into the air.

We have also received commandment…

WHAT TO SAY…

EXPRESSING YOURSELF…

AND…

WHAT TO SPEAK…

FROM THE VERY HEART OF OUR FATHER.
