What Do You Think?
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
An acquaintance of mine, Michael Ray Newman, had always dreamed about being a football player. Although small for his age, he remained undaunted. At first opportunity to play junior league, the enrolling coaches told his father that Michael was too small.
His father signed him up anyway.
Upon his return home, his mother asked how it went, to which he indignantly responded, “They said I was too small!”
His mother wisely posed four words which would become the very fiber, wiring the mindset of a young man, consequently determining his future:
“What do YOU think?”
We too often base our life on what others say or believe… or on circumstances or past experiences.
Outside influences shape and mold a paradigm… a filter through which we see all of life…
Developing a thought process by which we now see situations and predetermine the outcome.
But… what do you think?
“…For as he thinks in his heart, so is he...” (Pr23:7)
Peter was walking on the water out to Jesus in the midst of a storm, when his eyes fixed on the waves and the tumult surrounding them and began to sink. He cried out and immediately Jesus took him by the hand and said, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Mtt14:31)
The word translated “doubt” here simply means
· “to think twice about it”,
· “to halt between two opinions.”,
· “a double stance, to waver, vacillate”.
It is a word intended to draw a picture in one’s mind of a person standing uncertain at a crossroad refusing to choose one way over the other.
I had a basketball coach tell us, “If in doubt… DON’T!”
Consequently… I rarely did…
Despite being a good player…
I had no faith… No confidence.
I was never fully persuaded.
So how do we get our mind renewed about decisions, direction, and purpose?
“…receive with meekness the ENGRAFTED WORD, which is able to save your souls [psuche: mind, will emotions].” (Jas1:21)
If we are IN CHRIST…
WE NOW HAVE THE MIND OF CHRIST (1Cor2:16)
Think with HIS perspective
AND LIVE ACCORDINGLY! (Gal2:20)
