Two Kinds of Doubt

TWO TYPES OF DOUBT

Peter, a fisherman, knew not to step over the gunwales of a boat during a storm.

In his excitement he was so fixed on Christ that he began to walk on the water when called.

However, his “natural" instincts kicked in as he noticed the waves surrounding him.

In fear he “began to sink", and cried out!

“…Immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?” (Mtt14:24-33)

This word for DOUBT describes a state of mind halting between two opinions, causing one to think twice about something , or be uncertain as to which direction to take.

In other words, Christ could have easily said, “Peter, I called you… you were already walking on water… why’d you think twice about it?”

“How long will you HALT BETWEEN TWO OPINIONS? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.” (1Kings18:21)

The second way to DOUBT is pictured in Mark 11:23:  “whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not DOUBT in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.”

This word “DOUBT" is also translated “TO WAVER ” in Jas 1:6-8, which makes one “unstable in all his ways”… DOUBLE MINDED, “Let not that man think that he should receive anything of the Lord.”

Again translated “STAGGERED.”  “He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;” (Rom4:20)

A clear understanding of this word is demonstrated as “JUDGE”.

Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other JUDGE.” – make a selection by separation and mental judgement. (1Cor14:29)

Sadly, DOUBT is more commonly a part of our decision making process than we realize.

We find ourselves wavering back and forth between two different ideas…

eating of The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil…

Weighing all the “pros” and “cons” so we can make a “GOOD”, calculated judgement…

-        Making our list… and checking it twice -

And in our perpetual instability we wonder why all our plans are dying.

Because in the day you partake of that tree…

“You shall surely die” (Gen2:17)

BUT…

WE are to securely abide with

And in

The Tree of Life.
