The Porter
PORTER? WHAT IS A PORTER?
… and why does it play such an important role in the Old and New Testament?
David “set the PORTERS at the gates of the house of the LORD, that none which was unclean in any thing should enter in.” (2 Chron 23:18-19)
When Nehemiah began rebuilding Jerusalem the first thing constructed were the gates… then PORTERS were set at those gates BEFORE THE REST OF THE WALL WAS BUILT!
AFTER THEY FINISHED THE WALL… then they rebuilt everything else. .
“YOU are a city” (Matt 5:14)
“YOU are the temple of God” (1Cor 3:16)
John 10:1–3 “He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. TO HIM THE PORTER OPENETH.”
“I am the door of the sheep...” (Jn 10:7-9)
“I am the good shepherd…” (Jn 10:11)
CHRIST IS THE WAY for my body, my family, and the Body of Christ.
HE is also THE ONE who leads us into the green pasture and beside the still waters. (Ps 23)
“The Son of man is as a man taking a far journey, who left his house, and gave authority to his servants, and to every man his work, and COMMANDED THE PORTER TO WATCH.” (Mk 13:34)
“PORTER” means: Door-keeper, guardian of the gate, watcher at the entrance, gate warden, custodian (one with the keys).
So… the PORTER is to watch what is happening inside and outside the walls… of the city… temple… sheepfold… and give entrance only to Christ.
He allows or disallows Christ… or the enemy.
I am set as a porter over THIS body (temple) first…
Secondarily to my spouse and children…
Then… if given… as elder (bishop) in the Body of Christ (1Pet 5:2)
Matthew 16:19 I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
