Separate, Isolate, Insulate

In order to protect ourselves from rejection or disapproval, we develop a cloaking device, which will hide our true selves  and create a complex mask designed to present what we believe people want to see.

FIRST, we begin to SEPARATE… emotionally, mentally, or even physically, creating distance from even the potential of pain.

SECONDLY, we ISOLATE ourselves from anything we perceive would hurt us again. At this stage we not only withdraw our heart and lives from view, but no longer seek relationship.

We don’t trust ANYONE!

“I can protect my heart even better than God”

FINALLY,  we INSULATE our lives, preventing penetration of any outside force which would damage us in any way.

We then become almost incapable of relationship, making it impossible to pierce through a hardened defensive shell now surrounding our lives.

We hide in the shadows of protective walls and the impenetrable fortress we have built.

We prefer to dwell in that darkness where no light can make us vulnerable to prying eyes.

PROBLEM:  if we seek to save our lives… we will lose it. (Lk 9:24; 17:33; Mtt 16:25; Mk 8:35)

NO RELATIONSHIP … NO LIFE.  We have no capability of being as Christ, “a life-giving spirit”. (1 Cor 15:45)

 “…God is light,

and in him is no darkness at all.

If we say that we have fellowship with HIM, and walk in darkness,

we lie,

and do not the truth:

But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,

we have FELLOWSHIP one with another…”

(1 John 1:5-7)

FELLOWSHIP – Greek: koinonia:  a mutual contribution, distribution, communication, and (social) intercourse… a sharing, contributing partnership… communion.

When we choose to mount a defense and close off area after area of our life, we become a hardened kernel of wheat that has fallen to the ground, but will not give it’s life… it will not produce… and it will abide alone.

But…

If I choose NOT to save my life, holding tight as to not let anyone “hurt me”…

And die…. To self…

Jn 12:24 It is written:  “I will bear much fruit”
