ASK

ASK

Such a small, simple, yet complex word…

And depending on the context

We discern the intent behind it.

Fortunately, the New Testament, “ASK” is translated from 5 different Greek words:

(1)  punthanomai - to question, inquire for information

(2)  eroteo - To request as a favor

(3) zetema – question, implying search for something hidden

(4)  deomai - to beg… involves idea of urgent need:-  beseech, pray

(5)  aiteo - strictly a demand for something due

EVERYTIME Jesus says to “ASK”… it’s the word, “aiteo”

In John 15 He says:

·       “You are clean through the Word I have spoken to you” (vs3)

·       I Speak these things to you that your joy may be full (vs11)

·       From now on I no longer call you servants… but friends… for everything I’ve heard from the Father I’ve made known to you (vs15)

·       YOU HAVE NOT CHOSEN ME… I HAVE CHOSEN YOU (vs16)

·       And ordained you

1.     So you will go and bear fruit

2.     And your fruit shall remain

3.     That WHATSOEVER you ASK [“aiteo” -demand what is due] of the Father in my name, He “may” (granting permission/ authorization to-) give it to you. (vs16)

He begins explaining why He is leaving… and what’s to come.

He will send “the Spirit of Truth” (Comforter), who will lead you into ALL truth…  (15:26;16:13)

The disciples murmured amongst themselves…

Jesus, knowing they desired to “ASK” [2.eroteo- request a favor] of Him,

says, “Do you “ASK” [3.zetema – search for something hidden] among yourselves?” (vs17-19)

In John16:23-27 He explains how it all works AFTER He leaves…

IN THAT DAY you shall ASK (2.eroteo) me nothing… [no longer asking favors of me]

Whatsoever you shall ASK (5.aiteo- demand what is due of) the Father in my name, He will give it you.

Up until now you have ASKED (5.aiteo- demanded what is due) nothing in my name:

ASK (5.aiteo- demand what is due), and you shall receive, that your joy may be full…

AT THAT DAY you shall ASK (5.aiteo- demand what is due) in my name

and I won’t ASK (2.eroteo- ask favors of) the Father for you:

BECAUSE THE FATHER, HIMSELF LOVES YOU…

Because you have loved me”

Mt21:21-22  “If you have faith, and doubt not, you shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if you shall say unto this mountain, Be removed, and be cast into the sea; it shall be done. And all things, whatsoever you shall ASK (5.aiteo) in prayer, believing, you shall receive.”

Jas4:2-3

“You do not have because you do not ASK (5.aiteo)

You ASK (5.aiteo) and do not receive,

because you ASK (5.aiteo) with the wrong motives

that you may spend it on your pleasures.”

Phil4:6  “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication

WITH THANKSGIVING…

let your REQUESTS [Aitema - a thing asked or required - from aiteo (5)] be made known unto God.”

So.... apparently we are to

·       no longer ask HIM for favors

·       nor beg…

·       nor request as a wish to be granted...

rather ...

we are to demand what is due...

not as a spoiled child,

but knowing it has been paid for in advance.

Everything pertaining to life and godliness has been placed by His power into your account (2Pet1:3)

SO… “Let us then fearlessly, confidently, and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God’s unmerited favor to us…” (Heb4:16)

and simply put a demand on that account...

by making…

A WITHDRAWAL.
