A PLETHORA OF WORDS
A PLETHORA OF WORDS
I saw a post the other day that read, “Thank you for teaching me about “PLETHORA”… it means a lot!”
Don't use a big word when a singularly unloquacious and diminutive linguistic expression will satisfactorily accomplish the contemporary necessity.
Bahahahaha… TOO MUCH?
I used to think that if I could explain something from every angle… giving multiple definitions in Greek or Hebrew and the etymology of each word… the listener would finally be convinced.
But… as Paul discovered… arguing daily in the temple didn't do much to further the gospel. After spending years in the wilderness, he returned… encouraging people to retain “the simplicity that is in Christ.” (2Cor11:3NKJV)
“And when I came to you, brethren,
· I came not with superiority of speech or of wisdom…
· For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified.
· I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling,
· and my message and my preaching
WERE NOT in persuasive words of wisdom,
but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men,
but on the power of God. (1Cor2:1-5NASB95)
Merriam-Webster Dictionary states,
“There's no shortage of words to describe WORDINESS in English.
WORDY, VERBOSE, PROLIX, DIFFUSE mean “using more words than necessary to express thought”.
WORDY may imply [excessive talk]
in the vain attempt to disguise the fact
that they have very little worth saying
VERBOSE suggests a resulting dullness, obscurity,
or lack of incisiveness or precision.
PROLIX suggests unreasonable and tedious dwelling on details.
DIFFUSE stresses lack of compactness and pointedness of style.”
Why is it that we hear God speak from the burning bush and then we beat all around that bush when it comes to simply conveying the heart of what He says?
We use a shotgun when it takes a sniper rifle to strike the very heart of the matter.
Isa49:2TPT “He gives me words that pierce and penetrate… …He prepared me like a polished arrow and concealed me in his quiver.”
Jn3:34NKJV “For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God...”
Ecc5:2-3KJV “…Therefore, let thy words be few.
…a fool’s voice is known by…
…A MULTITUDE [PLETHORA] OF WORDS”
