IN VAIN

IN VAIN

The Oxford dictionary defines VAIN as: - adjective

1.     having or showing an excessively high opinion of one's appearance, abilities, or worth.

2.     producing no result; useless.

Merriam Webster states: VAIN: - adjective

1: having or showing undue or excessive pride in one's appearance or achievements : CONCEITED

2: marked by futility or ineffectualness : UNSUCCESSFULUSELESS

3: having no real value : IDLEWORTHLESS

The Cambridge Dictionary is simple in their definition of VAIN (adjective)

1.     not successful

2.     selfish

The overall consensus being:

VAIN: a prideful and excessive self-centered state of being marked by futility, which is ineffectual and produces nothing of value

Ps4:2AMPC

O you sons of men, how long will you turn my honor and glory into shame?

How long will you love VANITY [riyq: empty, vain, worthless, to no purpose]?

A different Hebrew word, (shav) is used in Ps127:1KJV

“Except the Lord build the house, they labour IN VAIN that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but IN VAIN.”

(shav) means: “to no good purpose… ineffective… nothingness… emptiness… vanity”

Ps139:20KJV

“…thine enemies take thy name IN VAIN.” (shav)

“You shall not take the name of the LORD your God IN VAIN (shav)…” (Ex20:7;Deut5:11NKJV)

“You shall not bear FALSE WITNESS (shav) against your neighbor.” (Deut5:20NKJV)

So… to take the name of God IN VAIN would then basically indicate that you are:

·       Using God’s name for your own purposes

attributing His involvement to YOUR actions

(thus impugning His character or nature

showing it to be empty, desolate, and powerless.)

·       atttmpting to validate YOURSELF

Eze13:7NKJV “You say, ‘The LORD says,’ but I have not spoken”

·       Bearing false witness about God

When you are sent by God, you don't have to justify nor qualify what you are doing or what you say…

…there WILL be SIGNS (Mk16:17-18)…

“And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.” (Mk16:20)

NOTE: The word, “them” is italicized and not in the Greek

…so… “the Lord working with and confirming THE WORD with signs following”

“…for our gospel did not come to you in word only,

but also in POWER” (1Thes1:5NASB95)

“And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom,

but in demonstration of the Spirit

and of POWER” (1Cor2:4NKJV)

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not IN VAIN in the Lord.” (1Cor15:58NKJV)

You shall not take the Lord’s name…

…IN VAIN
